California was transformed from the northernmost province of Mexico to the 31st state of the United States in little more than four years. What had been a quiet and obscure backwater became the focus of world attention because of the Gold Rush, and the effects of the change on California are still being felt.
Here we present a narrative recounting of the establishment of California state government, and transcriptions of selected key documents that illuminate life under Mexico during this period of change.
